Annual Soho Photo Alternative Process Competition.
2009 Winners Announced
Soho Photo's Annual Alternative Processes Competition was initiated in 2005 with the objective of recognizing the achievements of those photographers who continue to craft their images the way photographers have done since the beginning of the medium. These alternative processes include (but are not limited to) albumen, cyanotype, Van Dyke Brown, platinum/palladium, gum bichromate, bromoil, salt print, ambrotype, tintype, image transfer and Ziatype. 19th Century photographic processes dominate this genre, however some modern methods have joined the accepted ranks. Alternative photography results in the creation of one-of-a-kind handmade images, with the imprint of each photographer's special individuality and artistry.
In previous competitions, jurors have included John Stevenson, Christopher James and Tricia Rosenkilde. Dan Estabrook was the juror for Soho Photo's Fourth Annual Alternative Processes competition in 2008. His picks resulted in a month-long show featuring the winning photographs of 28 photographers from all over the United States. The winners' list from that competition is available, 2008 winners.
Soho Photo's 5th Annual Alternative Competition Show is scheduled for November 3–28th 2009. Soho Photo Gallery is pleased to welcome Robert A. Schaefer, Jr. as the distinguished juror for this year's competition. Schaefer is a founding member of Photoworkshop.com and writes about photography for Double Exposure and The Photo Review. He teaches photography at NYU and cyanotype at The Center for Alternative photography in Manhattan.
Submissions should arrive at Soho Photo, 15 White Street, NY, NY 100013 no later than September 12, 2009.
