National Photography Competition

In July, Soho Photo Gallery will feature the work of the 42 winners of the gallery’s 19th annual juried National Photography Competition.

The competition attracted upwards of 2,600 images from 321 photographers around the country. This year’s distinguished juror was Ariel Meyerowitz, renowned art advisor and former New York gallery owner. She selected Niki Grangruth and James Kinser of Chicago, IL as the winner for their image titled Odalisque (after Ingres).

At a time when identity and traditional gender roles are being widely redefined, the topic of gender emerges as the strongest in this year’s competition. Meyerowitz said she was surprised by the number of fine portraits “exploring notions of gender, identity and beauty, family and relationship….”

New York City Wildlife

George Grubb

On exhibit in the front gallery is Grubb’s award winning work New York City Wildlife:”In absurdity, there is clarity. Thus, the premise for this project uses a unique approach to raise awareness of a well published problem-the need for greater conservation efforts to protect endangered wildlife.  Having traveled to every continent photographing wildlife, the artist juxtaposes his wildlife imagery into New York City scenes and asks, ‘If we cannot protect our wildlife in their environments, where can they be safe?’ “
