Shooting with a 4×5 view camera, I use natural lighting patterns to emphasize the transient and evocative beauty of flowers. To me the texture, shape and tones of flowers becomes more compelling in black and white. I am able to eliminate the element of color, however beautiful, and focus on pure forms. Like the Dutch still-life painters, I view flowers not only for their inherent beauty, but also for their symbolism and ability to transmit ideas and feelings that are powerful and universal. In my images, I am trying to capture something that is ephemeral and fix that moment of existence. Whether it is in full bloom or fading away it is all significant to me.
