EARTHFORMS: Transcending Landscape Through Geological Photography
Joel Simpson, the international geological photographer, will show a selection of unconventional landscapes and geological “miniscapes” from his 2019 Nautilus Gold award-winning book Earthforms, then segue into more recent work that reveals “latent” content in rock surfaces, namely liminal archetypal figuration – with references to Carl Jung and the I Ching.
“By shifting the visual field away from the standard sky-horizon-earth paradigm,” says Joel, “geological photography paradoxically extends the scope of landscape by opening the frame to the expressive range of the flat canvas, thereby including Surrealist and abstract elements.”
