Soho Photo Gallery, New York City’s longest-running co-operative photography gallery, is excited to announce our 16th International Alternative Processes Competition. All selected photographs will be featured on the gallery’s website from November 12 – December 10, 2020. When the gallery, currently closed due to COVID-19, reopens a date will be set for the on-the-walls exhibition. We look forward to receiving entries.
What Is Alternative Process?
Alternative processes include, but are not limited to: Albumen, Cyanotype, Van Dyke Brown, Platinum/Palladium, Gum Bichromate, Bromoil, Salt Print, Tintype, Ziatype, Daguerreotype, Image Transfers, Liquid Emulsion, Chemigram, Photogravure as well as handmade prints created from digital negatives. Traditional Silver Gelatin Prints, C-Prints and Digital Prints are not eligible. There is no limitation as to the subject matter.
This year’s juror is Aline Smithson, a visual artist, educator and the founder and editor-in-chief of Lenscratch. She has exhibited widely including 40 international solo shows. Her work has been featured in publications including The New York Times, The New Yorker, and PDN. She is best known for conceptual portraiture and using humor and pathos to explore the performance potential of photography. Her monograph, Self & Others: Portrait as Autobiography was published by The Magenta Foundation in 2015. Her work was exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery in London as part of the 2018 Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize. She was a 2019 Critical Mass Top 50 and the same year was commissioned by Kris Graves Projects to create a book on Los Angeles. Aline has been teaching at the Los Angeles Center of Photography since 2001.
The competition is open to all photographers age 18 years old and older, excluding members of Soho Photo Gallery. Use the Enter link below where you will find submission instructions to upload your digital entries and payment.
1-5 images: US$45.00
6-15 images: US$5.00 each additional image
1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be awarded as well as two or more honorable mentions. Winners will be listed on the Soho Photo Gallery web site.
Photographs must be suitably prepared for gallery presentation or will not be accepted. Maximum height or width (including frame) of exhibited work cannot exceed 48”. Packing and delivery instructions will be emailed to participants. Work must be wired for hanging.
Commission & Insurance
Soho Photo Gallery will receive a 30% commission for any sales. Every reasonable effort will be made to protect your work while it is in our possession, but we are not legally responsible for it. Consider insuring your work for the time it is in the gallery. Work remaining in the gallery beyond 30 days after the closing of the show will become the property of the gallery.
