Shooting with a view camera, and using 4×5 Tri-X film, I follow natural lighting patterns to emphasize the transient and evocative beauty of flowers. To me the texture, shape and tones of flowers become more compelling when shot in hushed lighting and printed in mono tones. I am able to eliminate the element of color, however beautiful, and focus on pure forms. Like the Dutch still-life painters, I view flowers not only for their inherent beauty, but also for their symbolism and ability to transmit ideas and feelings that are powerful and universal. In my images, I am trying to capture something that has significance in the cycle of life, whether seemingly fading or in full bloom.
