Metamorphosis is a self portrait project comprising two visually distinct but thematically complementary series. I made these images to express the disparate emotions that structure my empty days during the Covid-19 Pandemic. In “Darkness,” I explore themes of death, body, and the creation of something new from something passed. In “Light,” I celebrate nature’s continuous cycles of rebirth and renewal.
The techniques used in the construction and presentation of the project are vital to its conceptual underpinning. I gathered and assembled each element from the natural world. It was important for me to go through the entire process alone to fully experience the solitude that so many are feeling. And while the presentation can feel jarring, I deliberately juxtapose darkness & light to express the emotional extremes engendered by a global emergency: despair and hope, vulnerability and strength. Ultimately, Metamorphosis expresses faith in the natural cycles of death and rebirth.
