Fascinated by the way we physically prepare ourselves to face the world, this project began as a way of exploring the transformation that took place daily as I used make-up and clothes to create a desired illusion. I was the model who would always be available and I learned to use myself in an objective way. But slowly, as the year progressed, the stripping away of that mask I had created became more and more the subject of the photographs – – the moments of stillness, of resignation, the moments of acceptance of the body unadorned and exposed. I stripped away color I usually worked with as I explored and fell in love with strong shadow and light. The original project, the mask, was itself stripped away. The project evolved, revealing the body of an aging woman, unadorned.
