Although called “America’s one true original art form,” Jazz and the musicians who play it have always been on the fringe of popularity.
With “Jazz Legends,” my goal was to showcase these overlooked musicians that usually let the instruments do the speaking for them. Like the genre, this series incorporates a variety of styles; including portrait, live event, and fine art. While documenting, I met over 200 of the most accomplished jazz performers in the world. What struck me was not their talent, but rather the relentless dedication they shared to their craft. The hours upon hours of practice that gives them the ability to improvise and share that raw emotion on stage. To mirror my experience, I included images of my own creative process to add context for the accompanying photographs. With film and natural light we get to know the musicians creating these magical nights for us.
