International Krappy Kamera Competition 2023

Soho Photo Gallery is pleased to announce the 25th International Krappy Kamera Competition – it is also the 30th anniversary of the SPG members Krappy Kamera shows! The gallery is located in lower Manhattan and is New York City’s longest running co-operative photography gallery. All selected photographs will be exhibited at the Gallery as well as on our website.

What is a Krappy Kamera

Our philosophy at Soho Photo Gallery is that in the hands of any artist great photographs can be made with basic equipment. To explore this talent, we are searching for extraordinary photographs made with lousy lenses. Examples of some Krappy Kameras are the Holga, Diana, Ansco, and pinhole cameras. You can also create your own Krappy Kamera by using your non-Krappy Kamera (e.g. 4×5, SRL, DSLR) and exchanging the lens with a Krappy lens (e.g. pinhole body cap, or Holga-type lens). Cell phones, disposables and point and shoot cameras are ineligible. Remember, just because a camera is old and moldy doesn’t make it Krappy. The lens is the determining factor.

Juror

Jean ‘Gino’ Miele is a Santa Fe based photographer who loves photography’s magical ability to transform the world-whether by Krappy Kamera or Photoshop, contemporary or antiquarian process. His work explores the borderlands between fiction and reality and reflects a lifelong interest in perception, spirituality and mysticism. Miele’s images have appeared in thousands of publications and his original prints have been exhibited in galleries from New York to Norway. He has taught workshops for Adobe, ICP, Maine Media among many others.

Submission

Digital entries must be uploaded at callforentry.org where you will find instructions for submissions. The competition is open to all photographers 18 years old or older, excluding members of Soho Photo Gallery.

Fees

US $45.00 (1-5 images)
US $5.00 for each additional image (up to 15 images)

Prizes

1st Place: $300, 2nd Place: $200, 3rd Place: $100 and three Honorable Mentions

Sales

Soho Photo Gallery shall receive 30% commissions for any sales.

Important Dates

Deadline for Submission: January 31, 2023
Notification of Winners: February 20, 2023
Opening Reception: March 16, 2023
