Inside the Mind of a Photo Competition Juror

Aline Smithson, juror of Alt Pro 2024, will be discussing the gallery show on November 25, 2024 from 5 to 6 ET on Zoom. The show opens in the Soho Photo Gallery and online on Wednesday, November 13 and closes on Sunday, December 1, 2024. Aline also juried a second Alt Pro show that is only online.

Aline Smithson is an interdisciplinary artist, editor, filmmaker, and educator based in Los Angeles, California. She is the founder and editor-in-chief of Lenscratch, a daily photography journal. She has exhibited widely including in over 50 solo shows at a variety of international institutions Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The New New Yorker, and PDN and was accepted in 2014 and 2019 for the Critical Mass Top 50. Aline has been a juror for a host of organizations and galleries as well as a reviewer and educator at photo festivals around the U.S.

Aline writes: “it was inspiring to see the range of imaginative approaches and the array of processes, such as Polymer Photogravure/Intaglio, Encaustic Photogravure, Photogram with lumen overprinting and toned cyanotypes. Please know that this was not a cursory examination, but a long hard look at your work. As a response to digital photography and the digital darkroom, alternative processes have allowed artists to celebrate the imperfect, to experience the physicality of photography, to embrace its unpredictability, and to create unique objects that are artful and meaningful. In addition, alternative processes can be used to elevate work thought concept.”
