Tonal Impressions: Marsh, Field and Tree

Tonal Impressions is a collection of woodland images – a simple theme that soon grew into something more as I re-imaged that body of work within a Pictorialist tradition.

More impressionistic than realistic. With an atmospheric perspective (sfumato) instead of an optical depth of field. Gradual transitions between light and shadow rather than sharp foreground with blurred (bokeh) background. More of a brush than a lens. Tonal modeling and, yes, experimentation with printing and paper options.

The collection here contains a mixture of monochrome images borne of film (then digitized) and digital. Much of the tonal modeling occurred in camera with some editing in Lightroom. Archival digital printing on a Hahnemuhle museum etching inkjet paper (350 gsm).

Frames are a gray wash over cherry wood with 8 ply acid-free mat board and UV non-glare acrylic glass. Each image is numbered (edition of 5) and signed on back of photograph.
